That means being able to convert documents to Braille automatically rather than with manual transcription, to use a Braille display, and to type on a physical or virtual Braille keyboard, all in their native language. Today, to extend this software support to another language, we at Seeing Hands are happy to announce the completion of the Haitian Creole Braille table for Liblouis.

How to use the table

This Braille table is currently available at s.seeinghands.org/haitianbraille in two formats. NVDA users can download an add-on package which, when installed, adds the Haitian Creole table to NVDA’s Braille settings. Any display or the PC Braille keyboard add-on will work with that table seamlessly. We also have the raw Liblouis table files which can be manually included into any other software that uses Liblouis. We are currently in the process of merging this table into the main Liblouis software, a process we expect to complete quickly, so soon it won’t be necessary to use either of these steps; the table will be in the default list of tables in all the software that uses Liblouis.

What is Liblouis?

Liblouis is very common software, but since it’s built into other things rather than being used directly, it’s not the most well-known. Chances are, though, that if you use Braille, Liblouis is probably at least one of the options, if not the only option, for how the text gets converted into Braille. Liblouis does the Braille translation for screenreaders like NVDA, Talkback, and VoiceOver, Braille translation software like Sao Mi Braille, and many Braille displays. It is created by people all over the world who add features, extend it to more languages, and build software that uses it for easy and global Braille translation.

Braille is used in every country and for most written languages on Earth, but for the benefits of Braille to extend to everyone, it is necessary that every language, not just the most common ones, […]

[9

post-447","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-braille-tables
["GET
